God I love a good hot dog! (that may have come out wrong but I don’t care)
When you crave a hotdog in Hampton Roads you have to go to The Barking Dog located in downtown Hampton. It’s one of those places that don’t need a website; it’s just word of mouth. No frills but really good. That’s the kind of place I like and it’s exactly what I got.
After weighting in line for no more than 5 minutes and getting offered water why we wait, we were ushered into the outside-only deck. There is a couple of picnic tables looking onto boats in the water. This place loves their disposable products: their paper menu, their plates, their utensils. There is a chalkboard with specials and beer available. Beers come in cans with Koozies. It really does feel like you’re in your backyard; well if your backyard is on the water.
I looked over the menu and decided on a Miller Lite to drink and 2 hotdogs with a side of fries. I decided on the Carolina Drive-In snap dog and the Seattle snap dog. You can get each of the dogs made with a 1/4 pound all beef kosher hot dog. The Carolina Drive-In Dog is finished with chopped BBQ, slaw and red pepper mayo. The Seattle Dog is finished with cream cheese and caramelized onions. I wasn’t so sure about the cream cheese and I was pleasantly surprised!
This place definitely satisfied my hot dog fix. The best is yet to come. The owner of the Barking Dog partnered with the owner of The Deadrise restaurant on Fort Monroe and I for one cannot wait to see what they have in store!
